Legislation

VIA IURIS within its topics promotes legislation effectively protecting rights of citizens (eg. access to court decisions) and public interest (eg. healthy environment). To this effect we comment legislative proposals or submit our own proposals. To advocate for positive changes we communicate with representatives of government and parliament within legislative process.

We call attention to non-compliance of the Slovak legislation with EU law or with international conventions, which are binding for the Slovak Republic. In important cases we inform relevant international institutions, for example by sending a complaint to the European Commission.

Our effort for a better legislation is accompanied by selected campaign activities - we open public debate through media and social networks.

Since VIA IURIS legislative activities are targeting Slovak decision-makers, our legislative proposals or comments are available only in Slovak. We have been engaged in the following legislative processes:

Accountability of judges:

  • Access to court decisions: Amendment to the law on courts (July 2010)

Accountability of public officials:

  • Transparent and competitive disposal with municipal property: Amendment to the law on property of municipalities and higher territiorial units (year 2009 and 2010)

Responsible citizens:

  • Broadening public participation in decision-making with significant effects on environment: Amendment to the EIA law (February 2010)
  • Improving access to information of citizens in construction proceedings: Amendment to the Construction Code (April 2011)
